Gotland Grönt Centrum/ Green Centre of Gotland combines education and advisory services to farmers, breeders, crafts people and small scale food producers. Gotland Grönt Centrum is situated in Roma municipality, in the center of Gotland.
Gotland, the largest island in the Baltic Sea, offers great handicraft and food experiences. Combine a dramatic climate, windy but sunny, with old and rich food-traditions and add excellent producers and restaurateurs. The result is a unique experience of flavours, materials and colours. The island has been cultivated for thousands of years and the nourishing soils are yielding fine crops of roots, vegetables and grain. Being in the middle of the Baltic Sea has been quite advantageous for Gotland. For centuries merchants have been based on the island trading with exotic goods from remote places.
Lamb has been raised for a very long time, the two endemic species being the natural choice. Lustrous and curly grey sheepskin from Gotland - the best in the world - are famous within the whole of Sweden and grey natural wool from Gotland is a speciality.
Gotland sheep produce wool in shades from silver to charcoal. The yarn is remarkably light when made up, has a wonderful lustre and takes dye beautifully. The wool is long, lustrous and dense. It comes in varying shades of grey, from pale silver or a rich blue-gray to a dark charcoal or almost black colour. The fleece grows in long, fine, and lustrous distinctive curls.
Wool craft is very present on the island with three spinning mills and a large number of craftspeople and designers working with the typical grey and lustrous wool of the local breed, but also with other types of wool from Gotland or elsewhere. Recently, a wool scouring facility was added to the already numerous wool processors. It is the only large scale wool scouring industry in Scandinavia, and gives Gotland the opportunity to take the lead when locally produced textile items are getting more and more sought for by the Swedish consumer.
In a near future Gotland Grönt Centrum AB is ment to be a platform for information for wool-producers in Gotland. Hushållningssällskapet Gotland, which is the main owner of Gotland Grönt Centrum AB, started its activities already in 1791 with education and advisory services to farmers.
