In late January partners and stakeholders from across Europe gathered in Prato, Italy for a successful study visit as part of the TEXAD project. Hosted by the Municipality of Prato, the visit provided valuable insights into sustainable textile production, circular economy initiatives, and industrial best practices within one of Europe’s most renowned textile districts.
The visit started with a tour of Marini Industrie, where participants learned about the company’s commitment to eliminating hazardous substances from its production process through the Greenpeace-supported Detox Initiative. This initiative underscores the importance of responsible manufacturing in the textile sector.
A key stop on the agenda was GIDA, a public-private partnership managing Prato’s wastewater treatment. The facility processes up to 50 million cubic meters of wastewater annually, with a portion being recycled back into the textile industry, demonstrating a model for sustainable water management.
Participants also visited TRAFI Creatività Tessile, a company specialising in innovative yarn dyeing techniques, and the Textile Museum of Prato, which plays a crucial role in preserving the region’s textile heritage while promoting awareness of circular economy practices.
The study visit was followed by the second TEXAD Steering Committee meeting, where project partners discussed funding opportunities, policy implementation, and best practices for fostering sustainability in the textile industry.
The Municipality of Prato provided a warm welcome, reinforcing the city’s leadership in textile innovation and sustainability. The TEXAD project continues to foster international collaboration, driving forward the future of a more responsible and circular textile industry.
